RAISING THE ROOF AT BURE PLACE IN AYLSHAM – NORFOLK EVENT PHOTOGRAPHER
Saturday a wedding, Monday a family lifestyle shoot, Tuesday suspended 250 feet above the ground in a tin can. Maybe this is taking variety of work a bit too far…..
Lee Todd of Just Regional asked me if I’d mind grabbing a few shots of a 15 tonne glass sunroom being lifted into position at the top of the water tower (soon to be an utterly stunning residence) in Aylsham this afternoon. A welcome break from editing, an interesting assignment given some of the figures involved (more in a moment) and only a few yards from my house, I was more than happy to oblige. The stats are indeed impressive – the crane is worth somewhere around £1.5m, weighs 220 tonne and had an additional 100 tonne of ballast. The 15 tonne sunroom was being lifted in one go to become the 7th floor of the water tower, replacing the original water tank.
On arrival, I witnessed a pretty seamless practice run ahead of the main event with media in attendance at around 2pm. At this stage I confidently asked the raised the silly question of whether there was scope to get a lift up on the crane in some way to gain a different view…..on reflection, a very silly question. Pointing to a red tin box, the answer was “why, of course we can, once the sunroom is in place”. Bugger.
Anyway, an hour or so later and desperate for the school run to demand that I left before the opportunity to go up in the crane arose, my bluff was called. Suddenly I was the centre of attention being handed a hard hat (useful if you fall from a 250′ crane I’d imagine), high vis vest (even more useful) and a safety harness (which made me feel no better at all). To lots of friendly banter I shakily climbed into the can and was swiftly lifted to the top of the now completely extended crane. For the next ten minutes I shook and gibbered away while taking as many photographs as possible and trying my hardest to blank out all thoughts of where I actually was.
On arriving on the ground with legs like jelly I felt pretty chuffed to have conquered a fear of heights (and survived) and managed to grab some pretty unique images of the beautiful town of Aylsham (and even as far as Norwich and the coast if you look very closely). I hope you like them, it demanded more of me than you’ll ever know!
So, onwards (and hopefully not upwards) tomorrow with an appointment at the Norfolk Showground to discuss acting as an official photographer for the Royal Norfolk Show later this month…..gotta love the variety! People often ask me what I photograph and, aside from answering weddings, the truth is fast becoming just about anything that I enjoy!
Did I really, really go up in THAT?!
And the view of where I’d been, from the safety of my back garden!
