Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Help Making an Informed Decision

With so many photographers to choose from, a vast variety of styles, varying experience levels and a plethora of packages to consider, I’ve created a guide to help couples make the right choice for them.  As most couples are not photographers themselves and are often planning their first wedding, this guide is intended to help couples ask the right questions and make an informed decision about where they invest their photography budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have others, please do let me know

I’m very happy to answer any questions that you may have and my availability for a video call is usually good if you’d like a virtual face-to-face conversation.

FAQs

What is the booking process?

Most bookings are secured by email. I have a simple online booking process which involves signing a wedding photography contract and a deposit payment. These 2 items secure a booking. I operate a first-to-book policy when I receive concurrent enquiries for the same date.

How far do you book in advance?

I take bookings up to 1 year in advance. If I am unable to fulfil an enquiry, I will always try to provide names of other local photographers of a similar style who are available.

What is a pre-wedding shoot?

A pre-wedding or engagement shoot is an opportunity to visit a chosen local location for some relaxed portraits before your wedding. These shoots can be great for getting to know each other a little better and getting used to being photographed (not that there's anything to fear). They of course also deliver some great images of couples in their casual clothes, in a relaxed and informal setting and make excellent save-the-date cards and signing boards for wedding days.

I don't like being photographed!

I know, not a question but I think that 90% of couples say this or similar to me ahead of their pre-wedding shoot or wedding day. 100% of couples say afterwards that they really enjoyed the photography element of their day and that they love how they look in the photographs. I am very relaxed and find that I'm able to quickly put couples at ease in front of my cameras. Even those that don't like being photographed (and I really know how you feel!) quickly become comfortable in front of my cameras and ultimately enjoy the experience and love their images.

How many images will be get and how long will they take to arrive?

I don't promise a fixed number of images because the documentary nature of my wedding photography is influenced by many factors such as weather and of course the size of each wedding day. I do routinely deliver approximately 250 images for a 2-hour wedding day, sometimes more. I edit my own images and this can take up to 4 weeks during the peak wedding season.

What time do you arrive for a wedding?

For all bookings, I plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the ceremony. This allows for plenty of time to capture some guest arrivals and to introduce myself to the person administering the ceremony.

Do you work alone?

I do work alone. I've found, over the 100s of weddings that I've photographed, that I'm able to provide a very comprehensive record of the day without needing a second photographer.

Are our wedding photographs safe?

I record all images to 2 memory cards to ensure redundancy from shutter-press. All images are further backed up in duplicate at my studio with a third copy uploaded to cloud storage immediately after each wedding. The security for your images is my utmost priority.

Do you travel for weddings outside Norwich?

From 2027, I'm restricting my wedding photography to the immediate area in and around Norwich.

What equipment do you use?

I use state-of-the-art, current generation professional camera, lens and flash equipment. I also carry back-up equipment in case of breakdown or damage.

Do we get any black and white images?

Yes, I provide both colour and black and white versions of your wedding gallery.

What happens if you're ill?

A very good question. I'm fortunate that I've rarely had a day off sick in my working life and I'd have to actually be incapacitated to not take some medication and fulfil my commitments. If I was incapacitated for any reason, I'd of course provide maximum notice, refund all money including the deposit and I'd do my utmost to find you a suitable replacement in terms of experience, approach, style and budget. I know 100s of photographers and, even in peak season, will almost certainly be able to find someone to capture your day for you. But let's not worry about that - I would be there for you!

Do you do Wedding Albums?

I do offer professional wedding albums but they are not included in my packages. I offer self-design albums that can be easily created and ordered by couples from within their online wedding gallery.

What is your style of photography?

I have a page dedicated to 'my philosophy' on this website (found under the Info Menu) but, in summary, I'm a largely candid photographer who prefers to tell the story of each wedding day through 'real moments' rather than staged ones. That said, if I see an opportunity for setting up a stunning image, I'll suggest it. I am also happy to help organise confetti and any group photographs while of course putting you at ease and ensuring that you look your absolute best when it comes to taking a few portraits.

Some Kind Words

Nothing but 5* Google Reviews

Getting along well with your wedding photographer is key to a great set of wedding photographs. Below, under the ‘Kind Words’ menu option and on Google you’ll hopefully find reassurance that I take a huge amount of pride in my professionalism and ability to fit in seamlessly at every wedding day. I sometimes hear of poorly behaved wedding photographers who not only under-deliver on the image front, but also annoy Registrars, Vicars, guests and couples by being overbearing, insensitive, inappropriately dressed or rude; I can 100% guarantee that I’m not that photographer!

"Well what can we say? We had the most amazing day. It was everything we both wanted, intimate, personal and relaxed. You played a huge role in making our day so special. You're such a lovely guy and were wonderful at making everyone feel relaxed and at ease. The photographs are absolutely stunning. They are so beautiful and we couldn't have wished for anything more. You have captured so many intimate and special moments that we can treasure forever. There were a few tears looking at them all and we can't wait to share them all with our family. All our family have commented about how you have really captured us and truly special moments. Thank you so much for everything,"

"I've been so busy looking through the photos over and over and over again I totally haven't emailed you to say THANK YOU!!!! We know they were going to be good but my goodness! Take a bow! You really grabbed everyone and everything exactly as it was. You outdid yourself! There are no words to thank you for being the cherry on the top of our perfect day. Please point me in the direction of any "client feedback" pages or rooftops to shout from! I hope you enjoyed your well deserved break with the family. Once my "back to earth with a bump" list has gotten significantly smaller we are going to get these photos sorted through properly and make albums etc. It deserves our full attention! We can't thank you enough."

You fitted in to our wedding party perfectly and lots of our guests have commented on not only how beautiful the photographs are, but also what a nice guy you are and how relaxed you made everyone feel. We really cannot thank you enough and will enjoy looking at our photographs for years to come!"

"We just wanted to let you know that we have received and checked over the USB memory stick (and backed up in two places!). We actually received it about a week ago but have been far too busy enjoying and sharing them to actually let you know :-) Everyone loves them, including us. We've got a selection on Facebook, and have shared the link around friends and family - my mum is even talking about organising a formal viewing session for her village friends when she figures out how to display them on her smart TV! Our wedding was everything we hoped for on the day, and your photos have perfectly captured all the things we loved about it, so thank you once again for your pre-wedding reconnaissance, your energy on the day, and your speedy delivery of the photos."

I feel a little sad the wedding is officially over now! Thank you for the amazing photographs, we love them. Thank you for making the photo element of the day so fun, for capturing our fab Floyd and our adorable little ones so well. You made us all feel at ease the whole day. We absolutely made the right choice having you as our photographer"

"Wow wow wow! Thank you so so soooooo much for our incredible photos! They capture the day so perfectly, we're absolutely over the moon! We're deep into honeymoon planning and preparations now but we definitely want some printed and so, as soon as we get back, we'll start deciding which ones!
The photos are already everywhere possible - our phones, screen savers, my desk! Thank you so much again, we really are over the moon with them!"

"We love the photos, they perfectly document the day! Thank you so much for all your hard work!! I don’t even really know what to say as I am not sure how to put my feelings into words. But it was a joy to have you around on the day, and you will always be considered a really special part of our wedding. We are so grateful for all the beautiful photos and are currently thinking about when we can hire you again to take more photos!"

It's been so nice to look over them and re-live all these moments again, we've laughed so hard at some pictures and some have almost made us cry :) You were such a great wedding guest to have, as well as photographer, and so many people came and told us how kind and lovely you were! We will be thoroughly recommending you to everyone we know, and we're so grateful that you were with us on the day :) Thank you so much."
